The Google AdWords Keyword Tool is a great way to discover how much traffic you could get to your website.
What it allows you to do is enter your Keywords in your niche and it will come up with a list of monthly searches by users on Google. The most valuable feature for users building a website is that it will give you suggestions on what words or phrases will be most searched for and their competition. By competition I mean, others using that phrase. For example:
The phrase “creating a website for free” has 246,000 searches per month! This is really high but it also comes with really high competition, so it will be hard to get noticed.
So the most ideal situation is to find a phrase that has medium in both. This way you will most likely get noticed and get quite a few hits if your niche is based around this phrase.
First day back in and I have managed to successfully integrate aMember user management/payment software with eFront. I have this set up now so that when the user clicks on e-learning, it will take them directly to the aMember login page. Here they can either sign up or login if they have already signed up. First of all the user will have to purchase a course in order to sign up. Once you have done this, you can purchase additional courses from the aMember control panel. Then once done you can proceed to eFront. All of the user details will have been carried to eFront and you will see the courses that you have purchased on your home page. To access you always will go through aMember. When you logout of eFront it will redirect you back to aMember, the index.php page of eFront will never be seen unless you are the administrator. I have renamed the file for administrator access to eFront.
I’m now 4 months in and im almost certain that we will be going with eFront as our LMS. I am currently in the specification stage. This stage should take me approximately 2 months to complete. There is quite a lot of planning. I will be going over the following specification areas:
- Hosting
- System
- Design
- Navigation
- Accesibility
- Content
- Administration
- Security
- Functionality
- Support
I have already looked into hosting and have found that Linode.com to be the most superior VPS. Continue reading
At the moment I am up to project stage 4, which I am evaluating the current market of e-learning providers. Most of the best providers I have found are free Open Source. This is quite possible as there is a great community out there always developing for Open Source. The two best tools that I have found are Moodle and eFront. Moodle is known thought the world and it has been along for a long time. eFront is quite new and the technology behind it is impressive, as are the amount of features it comes with.
Over the past few weeks I have been completing a consumer analysis. I have gained my information from a questionnaire that I sent out. This is going to be useful in that I will know what the clients want and what type of person they are, so I can then tailor the product towards them. They managed to tell me a list of courses that they are looking to do for e-learning.
I have no proof to base this on, but from what I have read here are some tips and things I have done to get my new site recognised. This is very important to learn as there is no point in a website without users. Some tips are:
Make sure the .htaccess file is setup with 301 redirect.
All links go to where they should, no dead links.
The website has no errors and is xhtml complient.
Have a relevant title to each page, key words
Have meta ‘description’ and ‘keywords’ You need a good description about each page and lots of key words.
The content on your page needs to have as many key words as you can without sounding stupid!
Outside links – you need links to your site from as many places as you can (not done yet)
Update site regularly – This may not be easy if its not a blog or news site. (not done yet)
Set up a webmaster and analystics account so that you can monitor the site, traffic and links etc.
These are just some things I have picked up and implemented. Will see how it goes in the next week!
Hi, new to this blogging, but ive decided to use this as a diary to document my skills progression over the next few years.
First of all, the reason for doing this is, ive recently graduated from university having completed a BSc Hons in ICT.
I have been currently taken on by a firm wishing for a web system. The place is for full time for 2 years.
My position is to create an e-learning portal, with e-learning courses and an online CPD tool for medical professionals. I don’t actually start developing till may, but my aim now is to compare the market and not to rush in and get something out there without proper planning.
This is my first blog, I will be updating this regularly!
Introduction
This blog will be updated with info about e-learning (my current job) and info about how to design and create a website (my website/hobby).
At this current moment, the website is not online yet, I will be posting a few blogs from my old blog (not many), just to give my blog some content!
